Two funny bunny stories
I have two funny bunny stories to share with you in this post. Both proving that Cinnamon is most likely insane.1) John and I went to Florida for a week in January. When we got back, the bunnies were obviously fine. After the obligatory punishment thumps from Cinnamon, of course. Over the next few days, though, I noticed that the bunnies weren't eating their hay -- both the state of the litterbox and the hay rack itself clued me in to this. I put hay in a kleenex box outside the cage, and that seemed to be acceptable. But for some reason, they just weren't hanging out in their litterbox eating hay out of the hay rack like they used to.
Over the next couple of weeks, I noticed that in addition to not eating from the hay rack, Cinnamon -- who often used the cage as a prime sleeping spot -- no longer would rest or sleep in the cage. Also, she would only use the litterbox outside the cage, unless she had to get a drink (the water bottle is next to the indoor litterbox). I spotted Brinco (GET IT?!) eating from the hay rack, but something was bugging the lop.
I could not figure this out. What about the cage had become so offensive to Cinnamon? I had cleaned it before we left, the hay was fresh, and nothing traumatic had happened to them. Finally, as a last resort, a possibility entered my mind -- right before we left on vacation, I scrubbed out all the litterboxes, and when I put them back in, I switched the inside and outside litterboxes. This couldn't be it, I said to myself. The litterboxes are identical except for their coloring, and after all that scrubbing, they probably both smell the same as well. I switched them back anyway, even though it seemed to be a longshot.
I think you see where I'm going with this. That was exactly the problem. With the regular blue litterbox back in the cage, hay, litter, and cage sleeping habits went back to normal. The only thing I can conclude is that there's something wrong with Cinnamon's brain.
2) Today I decided to eat an orange, and to share it with the bunnies as usual. I peeled it into a bowl and headed into the bunny room where both Cinnamon and Brinco slept in the cage. As soon as they smelled the oranges, they were instantly awake. I peeled off a couple of slices, preparing to break them up for the bunnies. During this time, Cinnamon flew out of the cage and hopped over to where I sat, bowl on lap. Within seconds, she grabbed the remaining 80% of the orange out of the bowl and sped off with it. I caught up with her at the entrance to the cage, where she was chewing frantically on her latest treasure. When I grabbed it back, it was covered with fuzz and dried litter dust that was on the floor. So much for me eating the orange.
I pulled off a slice for the bunnies, since they've probably eaten worse than fuzz and litter dust, and as I was doing so, Cinnamon grabbed the remainder of the orange off my lap again. She got a couple of good chews in on it before I took it back. Each of the bunnies "officially" got half an orange slice, but God only knows how much Cinnamon ate. John spotted her digging the carpet soon afterward, probably on a sugar high. That'll teach me to be careless with treats!
I'm not sure there's a funnier sight than a lop speeding away with almost an entire orange in her mouth.
